Our new Esports recruit on settling in and his 2020 goals

In the final instalment of our catch ups, we sit down with the newest member of our Esports team ahead of the F1 Esports Pro Series!

You may have heard of Shanaka - he made quite the impression on the F1 Esports community after winning the Pro Exhibition race in Canada in just his second event in the series.

He also made the F1 Pro Draft back in 2019, just a year after beginning his Esports career. He may have missed out then, but it only drove him to make an impact this time around.

It's been quite the whirlwind since joining the team, but Shanaka sat down to talk about his excitement for the coming season - and we're excited to see what he's capable of!

Shanaka, welcome to the team. How does it feel to be part of the squad?

"Thank you for the welcome! I'm just over the moon still, even though it's been a few days since I joined. I'm sure it'll take a while to sink in, but I'm pumped and raring to go to try and get some good results for the team!

You made it to the Pro Draft selection in 2019 and were picked this time around. Tell us about your Esports journey to date...

"To be honest, my Esports aspirations only really started at the beginning of 2018. I think I started taking it a little bit more seriously on that year's game, and I somehow made it to the Pro Draft!

“I was extremely proud of that, and I did well at the Pro Draft - it could have gone better, I could have done worse.

"At the time I didn't get the opportunity, and naturally you reflect and think about what you can do better.

“Then I was fortunate enough to get a chance in the Pro Exhibition Series and I showed my talent – and Racing Point decided to give me a chance. I'm hugely grateful for that."

You're now part of the team alongside Lucas and Daniele, how have you found working with them so far?

"They're extremely talented guys on the track and extremely nice and easy to work with off the track. I think we're going to make a great team.

"We've already had a little bit of experience alongside each other, but I think it's going to work really well in the F1 Esports Pro Series, so I'm excited about that."

What are your expectations for the 2020 F1 Esports Pro Series?

“Coming off the back of the Pro Exhibition Series, the aim is to fight for wins. I think if we can get off to a good start, this team can do really well in the series.

"Naturally, the drivers in the field are incredibly close. So they will all be trying to extract every little bit on every track and in each race. But hopefully, we'll end up near the top!"
