Five Key Moments from the Italian Grand Prix
After a thrilling race at Monza, we look back at the moments that made our Italian Grand Prix.
Take a peek at the five key moments that created our Italian Grand Prix…
1. Strolling into Q3
Racing drivers love Monza – that’s a fact! With its high speed, low downforce nature and the sheer intensity of the lap, it’s easy to understand why anyone would relish racing at the Temple of Speed.
For Lance, it must rank pretty highly on the favourites list. Saturday saw him maintain his 100% top 10 starting record at Monza by powering into Q3 for the first time this season and a third consecutive time at this circuit.
2. Lightning Lance!
Building on his strong qualifying performance, Lance’s opening laps of Sunday’s 53-lap Italian Grand Prix were seriously impressive.
The Canadian was able to clear Red Bull’s Alexander Albon off the line before dispatching of McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr into the Della Roggia chicane to advance to P7 – maintaining his fast-starting streak in 2019, having now gained an astounding 57 places on the first lap across the opening 14 races of the season.
3. Checo The Comeback King!
Checo’s charge from P18 to the points in Monza was undoubtedly one of the most impressive feats of the 89th running of the Italian Grand Prix.
Starting from the back of the grid, Checo drove an impressive race which, combined with a masterful strategy, paid dividends at the flag. Pitting under the Virtual Safety Car on Lap 24 for a fresh set of Soft tyres, Checo made light work of breaking back into the top 10 before clearing local hero Antonio Giovinazzi late on to take P7.
4. Battling the Bulls
For the second race in succession, Checo found himself in direct competition with a Red Bull on the final lap of the race. And while it was the Austrian squad that gained the upper hand in Belgium, Checo left Italy with the impressive scalp of holding off Max Verstappen to take six hard-fought points.
After starting from the back row of the grid, Verstappen battled his way through to P8 with Checo the final obstacle within his grasp as the final laps ticked away. Deploying all of his experience, our Mexican was able to hold off his hard-charging Dutchman opponent for 20 grueling laps to secure back-to-back top 10 finishes.
5. Grazie Ragazzi!
Italy is synonymous with passion and the Tifosi are the perfect example of why. The raw emotion of the crowd is what characterises the Italian Grand Prix, as thousands upon thousands of adoring supporters descend upon Monza – mostly sporting red, for obvious reasons!
Regardless of team allegiance, the sheer noise of the Tifosi makes every hair stand on end – and Sunday’s podium made that feeling all the more intense. It just wouldn’t be right to omit the pure passion of these guys and girls from our top five moments!
